In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, many transit systems eliminated fare collection in an effort to address safety concerns associated with driver/passenger interaction. As some precautionary measures are now being lifted, many agencies have resumed, or will soon resume, pre-Covid fare collection practices. Other agencies have begun to re-examine past fare collection policies with renewed interest in offering free fares system-wide or to customers such as youth, seniors or those who are economically disadvantaged. Although there are obvious barriers to implementation, agencies view this as a potential opportunity to enhance social equity, improve operations and boost ridership. In this session you will learn more about implementation and outcomes of free fare practices nationally and from two Florida properties with experience operating free fare systems.
